Whiton, son of Chauncey and Lucinda A. Whiton of Westford (Conn.), was a missionary for the American Missionary Association stationed in Liberia. He sailed in June 1863 aboard the ship Mary Caroline Stevens, arriving in Freetown, Sierra Leone by late July; on 29 July he married the only single woman of the group, Miss Danforth.
